I'm the pupil

Prayer is talking.
Meditation is LISTENING.

Which one helps us learn more?

Lucid meditation, like lucid dreams, lets you ask questions to change the course of the teaching.
It is a two way conversation; master and pupil.

prayer comes from praise, to be constant in appreciation is the goal, if you ask for something, there is awareness that something (understanding) is missing. Practice makes us craftsmen, so couldn't the craft of prayer become meditation?
